The Mystic Western Ghats

The mystic
Western Ghats

To be vacationing at one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots promises a bunch of wholesome experiences, but more enchantments. Stretching along India’s western coast, this mountain range is a treasure trove of endemic flora and fauna, offering something captivating for nature enthusiasts, adventurists, and wandering souls. The mountain range was originally called Sahyadri, a Sanskrit name meaning kind, benevolent, or tolerant mountain. And it comes as no surprise that the Western Ghats are home to several endangered and vulnerable species like the Nilgiri tahr, leopard cat, Nilgiri langur, and lion-tailed macaque. It hosts an impressive biodiversity, with at least 19 bird species and 220 reptile species endemic to this region. On one of your forest walks while you are here, ask the locals about the origin of coffee, and you are set to unfold the folklore one by one.

The decoction of Chikmagalur’s
origins and influences

India’s love affair with coffee began in the Sahyadri hills during 1600 AD, when Baba Budan smuggled seven beans to this region of the Malnad area, located in the present-day state of Karnataka. These mountains, which are even older than the Himalayas, gave refuge to this Sufi saint and this Ethiopian delight here in India. With coffee, this part of the Western Ghats has also sustained a very rich biodiversity and is recognised as one of the eight biodiversity hotspots in the world by UNESCO. With over 200 species of endemic plants and animals, this place is still being discovered by scientists, and discoveries are made every year.

The Hoysala dynasty also originated from the Malnad region in the 10th to 14th centuries, and Belur and Halebidu have been recently added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites as the epitome of Hoysala architecture, under the reign of a boy who fought a tiger. Discover the cultural heritage through local tours and interactions with the friendly communities that call this area home. Leave it to our team to share the backstories of all that you see around you and feel mesmerized while also enjoying some of the Malnad specialties prepared following heirloom recipes.
